Maybe Newsweek magazine thinks we’re too stupid to read. Right there on the cover of the current issue (pictured at right) it says
“She’s One of the Folks (And that’s the problem) “
Where have you gone, Abraham Lincoln?
Whatever happened to “government of the people, by the people, for the people”?
When did we morph into a monarchy?
Being “one of the folks” is the PROBLEM?? Really?
Is this an elitist point of view? Perhaps, though it seems only reasonable and patriotic to hold candidates for high office to high standards. Elitism in this sense is not about educational or class credentials, not about where you went to school or whether you use “summer” as a verb. It is, rather, about the pursuit of excellence no matter where you started out in life. Jackson, Lincoln, Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Clinton were born to ordinary families, but they spent their lives doing extraordinary things, demonstrating an interest in, and a curiosity about, the world around them. This is much less evident in Palin’s case.
– Jon Meacham, Newsweek, 10/4/08
Oh, it definitely is an elitist thing. Make no mistake about it.
And as such, it’s about so much more than where Palin went to school, or the fact that she is not as likely as Barack Obama or Joe Biden to use “summer” as a verb.
It’s about who Sarah Palin is; and by extrapolation, it becomes about who we are and what they think of us.
It’s about her deeply-held beliefs, and that she takes those beliefs seriously. But Newsweek is careful not to admit that. Barack Obama may claim to be a Christian, but Sarah Palin walks the walk by incorporating her Christian beliefs into her own personal philosophy.
Those who “summer” would never discuss Christian-held beliefs in public, and would certainly not allow those beliefs to guide their views on abortion, Creationism, or other issues. That alone is enough to label Sarah Palin too unsophisticated to govern among the elite class. Unlike Palin, Jimmy Carter didn’t let his Christian beliefs get in the way of supporting legalized abortion. Among elitists, it’s best to profess that those kind of things are above your pay grade.
(Side note: it’s quite laughable to read President Reagan’s name on that list as though he is deemed acceptable by the editorial staff of Newsweek. I’m old enough to remember what the snobs at Newsweek thought of Ronald Reagan.)
Another quality of Sarah Palin that disturbs the elite class is her unapologetic patriotism. The McCain/Palin ticket chose “Country First” as their campaign slogan, but it’s more than a slogan with the GOP candidates. One mi
ght notice that there isn’t a lot of flag-waving going on at Democratic rallies, and Barack Obama explained why he doesn’t feel put upon to wear a flag pin. The implication is clear: unwavering devotion to one’s own country is quite the provincial point of view among elitists. Paying higher taxes is the cosmopolitan way to show one’s patriotism.
Note to elitists: keep insulting us; keep that nose high up in the air. There are more of us than there are of you. God help the snobs if this election turns out to be about much more than who believes what about economic policy or who knows what about foreign policy. God help them if the voters start looking deeper into the candidates’ core beliefs.
